Research
Development
This Institute is marked by a
careful se-lection of complementary and high-quality taxonomic and ecological
skills. The research specialties of the faculty represent the major ecosystem
taxa. There are specialists in microbiology, phytoplankton and zooplankton,
benthic marine algae, various groups of invertebrates and fish. The research
approaches of the faculty, as well, encompass a wide range of matching
methodologies, including molecular biology, physiology, behaviour,
biochemistry, statistics, genetics, computer applications and environmental
sciences. This match facilitates team investigation, research and assessment of
marine biology, ecology or resources.
Taiwan has a rich marine flora
and fauna, but few researchers are concerned with systematically recording
taxonomy, ecology and distributions. The institute was established with the
goal, which the combination of faculty will support, of continuing with a major
strength in pure and applied taxonomy and ecology. These skills can be used to
assist in developing research and applications in fisheries, education,
environment and economy. The Institute began training PhD student in 1995.
Following the long-term University plan, when sufficient space is made
available a Marine Biology Department, for undergraduate training, will also be
established.
